Acoustic Multi-Mission Sensor (AMMS)
The Acoustic Multi-Mission Sensor (AMMS) is a revolutionary acoustical detection system, capable of detecting and localising Rockets, Artillery and Mortars (RAM) and Small Arms Fire (SAF) in a single, compact system. The system uses the so called ‘microflowns’, which simultaneously measure the amplitude and direction of sound events, rather than just sending pressure, such as a standard microphone. Due to this, a single sensor can detect, classify, and determine the direction of arrival (DOA) of acoustical events of interest.
The powerful signal processor embedded in the AMMS is capable of analysing the acoustic signatures and reports to the Battlefield Management System (BMS). The ground sensor‘s Digital Data Port interfaces with the customer specific hardware and BMS, supporting a variety of digital standards including the DAMA protocol. It also enables the user to make use of a Digital Data Port Adapter (DDPA) such as a digital antenna. The dedicated Sensor Management System (SMS) allows the full utilisation of a multi AMMS network.
The AMMS is a game-changer in the battlefield. The system has shown quite well performance for shooter localisation, both in terms:
- the maximum distance between the shock-wave of the bullet passing by the sensor node
- the accuracy, both in range and angle
Since the AMMS works with a broad frequency range, it is possible to determine the direction of both mortars (low frequency) and small arms fire (higher frequency) with the very same individual sensor node. A single sensor can localise SAF (direction and distance) and RAM (direction only). By combining the information of multiple sensors, it is possible to triangulate the location of RAM. When networked together AMMS is capable of localising both SAF and RAM events with even greater accuracy.
The Royal Netherlands Army has been using AMMS since 2012, to acoustically localise RAM and SAF.
The low Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) allows quick and easy deployment of a single AMMS to support forward observers, or multiple sensors networked to protect critical infrastructure, embassies, forward operating bases and/or combat outposts. The networked AMMS can also be operated in a Target Practicing configuration for target practicing, Mobile Sound Ranging configuration for borderline protection or in Compound Protection configuration. The new generation of AMMS is equipped with a Geo-boom which provides automatic position and orientation information. The Geo-boom can be used when a system is taken to a different training area for a short period and the same high level of accuracy is required as on the standard shooting range.
AMMS units can be operated from -20°C up to +70°C, in severe weather conditions with wind speed up to 6BFT. The AMMS consumes less than 2 Watts and is mains powered. For safety purposes against potential IEDs the unattended ground sensor is equipped with an anti-tampering feature, reporting any abnormal activity to the BMS.
Acoustic Multi-Mission Sensor (AMMS) covers a broad frequency range, hears all around in a full hemisphere, it is passive and cannot be jammed. Further, the system requires no ”line of sight” and works under adverse weather conditions (e.g. rain, for and snow).
